Abstract

The article describes the symbolism and sacred meaning of the number twelve. The main research materials are myths, legends, stable phrases, dictionaries, artifacts related to the Turkic language. The article uses the method of mythological and linguistic interpretation of the sign “shogym”. To interpret the value of the number 12, the author uses the 12+1 — “dot inside a circle” symbol. Based on this model, a new analysis of mythical, religious, linguistic, and ethnographic data related to the number 12 is proposed. The semantics of the number 13, created using the 12+1 model, is also revealed and explains the appearance of its sacred and negative meanings. As a result of the research, the mythological and linguistic meanings of such concepts as “besqonaq”, “uly mushe” were revealed and the concepts symbolizing the “point” (“giver of life”, “beginning of life”, “mother”, “uterus”, “belly”) associated with the names Umai and Eva were analyzed.
